Q6 Launches a New Course on the Gx Protocol

As part of its ever expanding IMS portfolio, Q6 has launched a new course covering the Gx Protocol. The traditional telecommunications billing paradigm of time and distance has been under attack in both fixed and mobile networks for some years and new, more sophisticated charging systems are being developed.  For UMTS, a new charging architecture, the Gx Protocol, has been specified by the 3GPP standards group. As this standard is evolving rapidly, this Q6 class covers both of the most recent updates of the 3GPP specification,, Release 6 and Release 7.

The 2-day course, UMTS Charging Management - Gx Protocol (GEN3036), presents the overall architecture of UMTS Charging Management before examining key aspects in detail, namely the operation and provisioning of charging rules over the Gx interface.

The definition of the Gx reference point has changed between Release 6 and Release 7 of the 3GPP specifications. In Release 6 it is between the Traffic Plane Function (TPF) and the Charging Rules Function (CRF) whilst in Release 7 it is between PCRF (Policy Control and Charging Rules Function) and a GGSN. This area of evolution is included in the class.

The Rx interface, used to exchange Flow Based Charging control information between the Charging Rules Function (CRF) and the Application Function (AF), is discussed.

The Diameter Base Protocol provides the Authentication, Authorisation and Accounting (AAA) facilities needed by the architecture. Diameter thus replaces older systems such as RADIUS.

The evolution of Policies is also described.
